Packing Fragile Items for a Move

Use cushioning, immobilisation and box selection as a system.

Fragile packing works when the item cannot strike the carton wall or another object during normal handling.

Wrap, then immobilise

Protect the surface first, then fill empty space so the item cannot shift. A heavily wrapped object can still break if it moves freely inside a large box.

Separate layers

Plates, glassware and ornaments should not bear directly against each other. Dividers, paper and cushioning create sacrificial layers that absorb movement.

Test the box before sealing

Gently move the packed carton. If contents shift or rattle, add void fill before taping it closed.

Try these quantities in the Bubble Wrap Calculator, then adjust them to your inventory.

Worked planning example

Twelve small fragile items with a 1 sq ft wrap allowance, two layers and 25% overlap use 30 sq ft. At 2 ft roll width, that is 15 linear ft. Add box dividers and void fill separately: neither is included in bubble-wrap area. Trial-pack one representative item before preparing the whole group.

Common mistakes

  • Allowing wrapped objects to strike each other inside a partly empty carton.
  • Treating a fragile label as a substitute for immobilisation.
  • Forgetting that extra layers increase the packed dimensions.

Frequently asked questions

Does the wrap calculator include void fill?

No. It estimates wrap area, length and optionally rolls. Add paper, inserts and other materials separately.

Should all fragile items use the same preset?

Only if their sizes and protection needs are similar. Calculate distinct groups separately for a mixed collection.

When is specialist packing sensible?

For items whose fragility, value, size or manufacturer instructions exceed ordinary household packaging. A quantity estimate does not establish protection adequacy.
