The fastest method is usually a mixture rather than one container for all clothing.
Keep hanging clothes hanging
Wardrobe boxes reduce re-hanging work for shirts, dresses and jackets. Bulky coats may reduce each box’s practical capacity.
Use suitcases for dense clothing
Jeans, shoes and folded knitwear can use luggage you already own. Avoid making very large cartons excessively heavy just because clothing compresses.
Protect seasonal storage
For long-term storage, make sure clothing is clean and completely dry before packing. Choose breathable or sealed storage methods according to the material and storage environment.
Try these quantities in the Wardrobe Box Calculator, then adjust them to your inventory.
Worked planning example
A wardrobe contains 60 hanging garments, including 12 bulky coats, plus folded clothes for 3 large cartons. Weighted hanging demand is 72 spaces, so the 24-space wardrobe reference needs 3 boxes. Record 3 wardrobes and 3 large cartons in the volume breakdown; do not count the same clothes in both.
Common mistakes
- Putting shoes against unprotected clean garments.
- Counting folded clothes again as hanging garments.
- Choosing a short wardrobe for full-length dresses.

Frequently asked questions
Must every garment stay on a hanger?
No. Fold items that tolerate folding and reserve wardrobe cartons for garments where hanging is useful.
How should coats enter the calculator?
Include them in total hanging garments and also in the bulky subset; the formula adds one extra space for each bulky garment.
How do I estimate folded-clothes volume?
Trial-pack one reference carton or measure the packed bags. The wardrobe rail model does not apply to folded stacks.
