Practical guide

Packing Books for Moving

How to keep book boxes compact, liftable and easy to stack.

Books are dense, so the main planning problem is weight rather than volume.

Use smaller cartons

Compact boxes keep total weight manageable. Fill gaps with light packing paper rather than continuing to add books until a large box is full.

Pack flat or spine-down

Avoid placing books with the spine facing upward under pressure, which can stress bindings. Valuable editions may need individual wrapping and climate-appropriate storage.

Estimate total weight early

A library can add hundreds of pounds to a move. Knowing the approximate total helps with vehicle payload, handling time and deciding whether to move every volume.

Try these quantities in the Book Box Calculator, then adjust them to your inventory.

Worked planning example

For 150 books averaging 1.5 lb, total book weight is 225 lb (102.06 kg). At an entered target of 35 lb per box, ceil(225 ÷ 35) gives 7 boxes, averaging 21.4 books and 32.1 lb each. This is a weight-based minimum; unusually large books may require more cartons.

Common mistakes

  • Filling a large carton simply because books fit.
  • Treating average book weight as exact for art books and paperbacks alike.
  • Ignoring packaging weight and box condition.

Frequently asked questions

How can I improve average book weight?

Weigh a representative sample and divide by the book count. Use several types if the collection is mixed.

Does the result guarantee the books fit physically?

No. The calculator divides weight by your target. Check the reference Small carton dimensions and trial-pack large-format books.

What happens if I enter zero books?

The result is zero boxes, zero total weight and zero averages; no box purchase is recommended.
