Practical guide

How Many Moving Boxes Do You Need?

A practical way to estimate box count without pretending every home packs the same.

Start with home size, then adjust for how full the home is, the number of people and the types of things you own.

Why bedroom count is only a starting point

A two-bedroom flat with built-in storage can contain less than a crowded one-bedroom flat. Treat room count as a baseline, not the answer. Books, kitchen equipment, hobby materials, children’s belongings and garage contents often move the estimate more than the floor plan.

Build a mixed box plan

Use smaller boxes for dense items such as books and canned food, medium boxes for most household goods, and larger boxes mainly for light bulky items. A mixed set is easier to carry and usually packs a vehicle more efficiently than using one size for everything.

Add a controlled buffer

A buffer of roughly 10–15% is usually more useful than buying a huge surplus. Keep some boxes unassembled until needed, and check the return policy where you buy supplies.

Try these quantities in the Moving Box Calculator, then adjust them to your inventory.

Worked planning example

For an average two-bedroom home with three people, the baseline is 40 boxes: 12 Small, 18 Medium, 8 Large and 2 Wardrobe/specialty. Choosing Full increases the total to 50: 15 Small, 23 Medium, 10 Large and 2 Wardrobe. Add a real room-by-room inventory before ordering, especially for books and hobbies.

Common mistakes

  • Counting bedrooms but overlooking an occupied garage.
  • Assuming the wardrobe allocation exactly matches your hanging clothes.
  • Buying every box before trial-packing one cupboard.

Frequently asked questions

Does an extra resident change the box estimate?

Yes. Relative to the home-size baseline, each extra person increases the household factor by 6%; a lower household count reduces it, with a 90% floor.

How do Lightly furnished and Full differ?

Lightly furnished applies 75% of the baseline for limited stored belongings. Full applies 125% for stocked cupboards and additional possessions.

Should I use this estimate for furniture volume?

Use it as the box portion of a moving inventory. Furniture, appliances and outdoor items must be added separately in Moving Volume.
